Happy New Year! It’s a fresh, baby-faced year, full of hope and excitement. This is the time when we reflect on the past, look to the future and plan and dream about what we would like to create for the year ahead.
It’s a great time to pause, look inward and consider what we want, how we would like to grow, and what we need to let go of.
Most people make resolutions. A commitment to stop a bad habit, or create a new one.
And most people fail at these resolutions. It’s a common fact that New Years Resolutions don’t work. In fact, studies show that only 8% of people who make resolutions succeed.
That’s not a great number.
But. You still want to see change and growth in your life. You still want to set your sights on something and achieve it.
Here are four alternatives to setting Resolutions.
- Hire a Coach. Instead of making a huge promise to yourself on January 1, invest in an ongoing relationship with a Coach. If you commit to meeting twice a month for a year, you will be blown away at what you can achieve, and how much you will grow in that year. Working with a coach brings results much faster than working on your own. You have accountability and you have someone who will believe for more for you and won’t stop until you get it. Invest in yourself and you will reap the benefits!
- Love Yourself. What if, instead of enforcing external rules on your life, you simply loved yourself – right here, right now? What if you accepted yourself right where you’re at, flaws and all? What if you made the choice to bring compassion, grace, and non-judgement to yourself? We all have things we would like to change in our lives. We all have areas of growth. And we so often try to change by creating external motivators for ourselves. Strict diets. Rules about exercise. Punishing regimes. Beloved, these will never work. True change comes from within. Your motivation must be internal, and that begins with self-love. When you love yourself, you will want to take care of yourself. When you love yourself, you will honour and respect your body, your mind, your time, your finances – everything becomes sacred. Start with love.
- Choose gratitude. Gratitude changes everything, my loves. When you focus on what you are thankful for, it creates a wellspring of positive energy. You will see things in a different light. Focusing on what you have instead of what you don’t have will propel you in a positive direction. Make a list of 100 things you are grateful for, and bask in the knowledge that you are blessed. If you long for true and lasting change, this is an excellent place to start!
- One Word. Finally, choose one word to describe what you desire for 2016. Just one word. Make it the word that resonates all the hope, faith and promise that you want for yourself. Then place that word around your home. Put it on sticky notes on your computer, your bathroom mirror, your fridge. The dashboard of your car. Your gym bag. Let it become your mantra, the word that you whisper to yourself before you go to sleep at night, the thing you shout out each morning when you wake up. This word will become a touchstone for you. A beacon to guide you. A prayer to the Universe.
If you’re ready to give up on the Resolutions, and you want to embrace something new, try one of these, or all of them. You will end 2016 a different person than when you started. You will love yourself more. Be more grateful. You will see the Universe show up for you, and you will grow and change in ways you never imagined. It takes courage to look inward for the change we want to see in our lives, but it’s the only way that’s real and lasting.
Sending you love and light for a magical 2016!
